Frequently asked questions - Retina

What is the retina?

The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of your eye. It senses light and sends signals to your brain so you can see clearly.

2

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the small blood vessels in the retina caused by high blood sugar over time. It can lead to vision loss if not treated.

3

What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?

In early stages, there may be no symptoms. As it gets worse, you might notice blurry vision, floaters (dark spots or lines), or vision loss.

4

Can diabetic retinopathy be prevented?

Good blood sugar control and regular eye exams help prevent or slow the disease.

5

How often should people with diabetes get an eye exam?

At least once a year. If you already have diabetic eye disease, you may need exams more often.

6

What is a retinal tear or detachment?

A retinal tear is a small hole in the retina. If fluid passes through, the retina can lift off (detach) from the back of the eye — this is an emergency that needs quick treatment.

7

What are warning signs of retinal detachment?

Sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a dark shadow moving across your vision.

8

What is a vitrectomy?

Vitrectomy is a surgery that removes the gel (called vitreous) inside the eye. It’s often done to treat retinal problems like bleeding, scar tissue, or detachment.

9

Why might someone need a vitrectomy?

Common reasons include bleeding in the eye from diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, severe floaters, or macular holes.

10

Is vitrectomy painful?

No. The surgery is done under local or general anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure.

11

How long does recovery take after vitrectomy?

You may need to rest for a few days and use special eye drops. Vision improves gradually over weeks to months.

12

Will I need to position my head after vitrectomy?

Sometimes, especially if a gas bubble is placed in your eye to help the retina heal. Your doctor will explain exactly how long and how to position.

13

Can diabetic retinopathy be cured with vitrectomy?

Vitrectomy treats complications from diabetic retinopathy, like bleeding or scar tissue, but it doesn’t cure the disease itself. You’ll still need regular eye exams.

14

What treatments are available for diabetic retinopathy besides surgery?

Laser treatment and injections inside the eye can help stop or slow the disease before surgery is needed.

15

Is vitrectomy the only treatment for retinal detachment?

No. Depending on the case, laser, freezing treatment, or other surgical techniques may also be used.

16

What happens if I ignore symptoms of retinal problems?

Retinal conditions can cause permanent vision loss if not treated quickly. Early treatment gives the best chance to save your sight.
